These remarkable women in geomatics are making waves in a male-dominated industry

Geomatics is an immaculate blend of science and technology that revolves around gathering, analyzing, interpreting, and distributing spatial data. Unfortunately, this dynamic, exciting and innovating industry has, like many STEM-focused industries, traditionally been a male dominated one. In recent years however, the industry has opened its doors generously to women, many of whom have made a considerable mark in the industry. These trailblazing women in geomatics have made unprecedented contributions to the industry through major success, expertise and innovation. Several names have shattered the stereotypes with massive achievements and contributions that we can’t resist acknowledging. Here are some of the trailblazing women breaking barriers in geomatics.

Barbara J. Ryan

Barbara is an exemplary woman who is the Executive Director of the World Geospatial Industry Council. She is a pioneer in opening hundreds of thousands of satellite images and other data related to Earth observation without any charge, which led to several planners and scientists making better decisions and solving the problems within the political barriers. Her work acts as an advocate to the issues of agriculture, climate change, biodiversity, energy, wealth, water, and natural disaster planning.

Ingrid H.J. Vanden Berghe

Ingrid has graduated as an agricultural engineer at KU Leuven. Before joining the public service, she acted as a researcher. She served as an advisor to the Minister of Environment, Town and Land Use Planning, and Public Works. She worked as a director of the research center for the Christian Democrat Party in Belgian politics. Later in 2002, she provided her ingenious services in geographical information as the General administrator of the National Geographic Institute. She is currently an asset to the industry, serving as the President of EuroGeographics. Ingrid is also a member of the board of several research organizations.

 Agata Fischer

Being featured in the global top 40-under-40 rankings, Agata Fischer has attracted several magazines to contribute to Switzerland’s geospatial industry. She is widely known for her solid expertise in ground-penetrating radar and construction technology.  She is the Business Director for Leica’s Detection and Services group; while her academic background is in business and marketing, her exceptional understanding of geomatics, its practice, and emerging technologies makes her an exemplary woman in the geospatial industry.

Dr. Vanessa Vivienne Lawrence

Dr. Venessa has mapped out a new career direction for women with her achievements in geomatics. In 2008, she was declared the South East Director of the year, and in 2011 was awarded as the Global Geospatial Personality of the decade 2000-2010. Being the co-chair of UN-GGIM, she used her seat to create national and global policy frameworks, develop institutional frameworks to enhance global geospatial capacity, and use accurate data analytics to improve decision-making.

Anne Hale Miglarese

Holding 30 years of extensive experience in the geospatial industry, she has used her profound understanding of local, state, and federal relationships to develop geospatial and environmental information. In 2017, she gathered the top philanthropists and professions like Omidyar Network, Gates Foundation, and Amazon together to manifest the Radiant Earth. This answered the global development community’s call to get better access to earth’s observation data. Her work has been an embodiment of excellence and prosperity in the world of geomatics for the entire community.

Women have been breaking into every possible profession that exists. Their prominence in the geospatial industry is no different, and is without a doubt worth acknowledgment. These giants in the industry have been contributing substantially and act as an inspiration to young women looking to break into the industry, as well as those with a passion for geospatial imaging.

Leading Edge Geomatics is proud to be an equal opportunity workplace and encourages the career development of all members of our team.
